This applies across both settings. It covers medicines while a child is with us: short courses, long term treatment, and lifesaving medication such as adrenalin, inhalers and insulin, together with the meetings and health care plans agreed before a child starts.
Children should remain at home if they have an infection, and the setting should be informed about the type of infection so that other parents can be informed if necessary.
Staff will closely observe any child who appears to be unwell, if symptoms persist or worsen, staff will contact the parent.
If a child is on prescribed medication for a short time, the child must complete their course of medication at home before returning back to the setting. It will be at the discretion of the setting to authorise the attendance of any child taking short term medication which must be administered during a session.
If a child must have lifesaving medication administered in an emergency such as adrenalin, inhalers and insulin, please speak to the Manager/Director at registration about this to ensure we have adequate provision in place for them. It is important to ensure the well-being and health of every child that attends the setting.
We therefore must have a GP prescription, a health care plan drawn up with the parent and us at the setting along with a meeting with regard to any long-term use of medication or lifesaving medication and draw up an emergency health care plan for your child before enrolment can be completed.
If the condition is such that it requires a health visitor, nurse or other health professional, the setting will arrange for them to visit and advise on the health care plan, risk assessment and procedures.
